The statistical performance curve that we are used to viewing has the shape of a bell. Therefore it is known as the “bell curve”. It shows that a very low percent of any group of people to have a low-level of performance, a majority that is somewhere in the middle and an

equally small percent that is on the extreme right hand side of the curve, known as extraordinary amongst other names.

I am assuming that there is a common understanding for what “low-level” performance is all about. It has to do with senseless violence, destruction and or death of any living system. As such you will never find even the most technological form of warfare anywhere but on the left-hand side of the human performance curve. On the right-hand side, we have demonstrations of artistic, scientific, mental, emotional or physical performances that provide us with a window of opportunity to understand that, “What is possible for others is possible for me – given the same conditions”.

Arguments that human performance is genetically determined have been adequately proven wrong through the work of many different scientists. The external environment is the biggest determinative factor in shaping or provoking certain kinds of behavior and results.

Statistical bell curve of performance

What is it that is fascinating about that right-hand side of the curve?

If you take any number of individuals that have at some level been able to demonstrate behavior that we call extra-ordinary, it’s usually understood as something that is breaking previous limitations. Behavior and results have expanded and expressed an unknown potential. Such an experience may be recognized as being very momentary, sometimes more lasting, but it is always recognized as something special. It is often described as, “Being in the flow”.

The implications of the description are not without a good reason. The flow of anything extraordinary is always without resistance, friction, conflict or competition against the energy directed from the intention to act.

There is no other way to find this “space” called flow – with the existence of energy going in the opposite direction. This is a matter of self-evident fact. It’s not a theory or conjecture. You or anybody or anything can never reach their real potential at anything until the resistance has been reduced or eliminated as much as possible. Leaps of improvement are always associated with getting rid of or reducing resistance and friction.

There seems to be another factor that is also a condition to achieve those extraordinary results. That is intelligent organization of resources. These resources include internal and external sources. Thinking, emotion and action all need to be cooperatively and synergistically synchronized and arranged just like an orchestra and director. There can be no confusion and all parts must do their best at the right time, place and tempo. All parts are committed fully to a collective agenda, direction, intention or goal.

Slow learning must be considered inferior to fast learning. You want to elegantly navigate through the necessary trial and error part of training before you get to mastery. It makes the learning process so much more fun. When you are learning something new, you always want to learn from somebody that is good at what they are doing. It saves you from making a lot of unnecessary mistakes trying to re-invent the wheel.

So when you are looking to learn about self-actualization of human potential, you are not well served by applying your focus on all the ways already invented to not succeed. Doing so will commit you to spending all your time learning how to fail. Its not a really intelligent choice. It does seem to be quite a “normal” choice to make. The doctor is an expert on illness but knows little about the prerequisites for vitality and health. The same is quite true for the science of mental disease.

Somewhere along the path, the extremely extraordinary expression of vitality and potential has been lost in the focus on disease and defining what is normal. If you set your goals toward what is mediocre, you will surely achieve that goal. As you read through this material you will discover that though the advantages of taking life “easy” and reaching for comfort might seem to be the meaning of life – you will discover it brings along with the pleasure a lasting aftertaste of dis-ease.
